Why is Streaming Taking Over in TV, Games and Casinos?
It is impossible to look at the modern shape of media without taking notice of the world of streaming. From humble beginnings, these services have maintained an upward trajectory for years now, with little sign of slowing down. So, what is it that makes this such a desirable choice over the big three of TV, gaming, and online casinos?
Television
High-speed internet is now standard all over the world and, combined with home computers and mobile devices that are faster than ever before, we have unlocked content in an entirely new way. Older infrastructure offered strict programming timetables not because of greed, after all, but because of necessity.
Modern streaming technology allows us to set our own timetable, not have to worry about the quality of these broadcasts and forget about the pain of rewinding tapes when we were done. Offering much of what is available on traditional networks, and with exclusive content of their own, it’s not difficult to see why Hulu and Netflix have left such a profound impression.
Gaming
With the recent announcement of Google’s Stadia, we could be about to receive the long-promised potential of game streaming on a level which finally lives up to the hype. The excitement here comes from the fact that this technology allows game streaming onto almost any device, without the need for a bulky or expensive base computer or console.
In effect, this means gamers can enjoy the most modern games anywhere with an internet connection, having to bring nothing with them but a controller and a device capable of hooking into Chrome. While latency and bandwidth is still a concern, more so here than with straight video streaming, improving infrastructure tech will continue to mitigate these issues.
Make no mistake, this type of streaming is the most convenient ever, and its place as a serious gaming threat is a matter of when, not if.
Online Casinos
Not an industry to rest on their laurels, online casinos have been some of the most progressive when it comes to their adoption of new and growing technologies. This was the case when the internet first became properly viable, through its higher rates of adoption, and into the era of smartphone technology.
Now, with mixed reality entering the public consciousness, online casinos have adopted this into their streaming tech, and the results have been hugely popular. In fact, even if a website receives lukewarm reviews, it can still prove popular based on the offering of live casino games.
These games stream live dealers onto a traditional software user-interface, effectively giving players the simplicity and convenience of playing at home, with a realistic physical casino experience. With virtual reality technology soon approaching mass-market viability, who knows just how dominant this could become next.
Variety and Convenience
It is these two components which have helped online streaming rise from alternative to primary choice for many. What is offered today from online streaming simply has not been possible with older technology, and now, with the opportunities this affords, people can get more of what they want when they want, and easier than ever before.

This might be the first under 2.0 for NCIS if it doesn’t adjust up hard

NCIS did not adjust up that 2.0: https://programmingins.wpengine.com/?p=7382
renamoretti1 says:
The 18-49 is meaningless, but the overall audience is also bad (for NCIS), which means it will still clobber all comers (which says a lot about the lack of quality of the comers!)

Garebelman says:
Watched Containment last night. Was pretty good actually! Should be an interesting mini 13 episode event.
The Voice being down and not phasing Chicago Med or Fire shows their longevity.
Where do you think they will place Chicago Justice?
Hello Larry says:
I agree these shows will be around for a very long time and are very valuable players to the network and if The Voice continues down this road they will not be the highest rated show of the lineup one of these days. It might be one of the Chicagoans that do it first or something else.
Garebelman says:
With so many Chicago Shows along with SVU, NBC should consider moving /something/ to Thursday. The Blacklist continues to be in a sea of Red(dington) of its own there.
renamoretti1 says:
Good point about the better retention, but the overall numbers are nothing to call home with talks of “hits”.
Given disasters like New Girl and Agent of Shield keep getting produced, it’s become meaningless to say “it will be renewed”.
Hello Larry says:
There might not be a more valuable scripted pair on the air than the two Chicagoans and the NCIS twins although I feel the Chicagoans are more valuable because this franchise hasn’t been around as long as NCIS was as NCIS had the luxury of coming around a time when ratings were still much more higher back in 2003.
NBC needs to keep the Chicago twins together on Tuesdays and not move them around. They should figure out where they put Chicago Justice first and use that show to rebuild Thursdays for them.
Joe says:
The NCIS Triplets are far more valuable as they not only bring in demos but also viewers. The Chicago shows have never been hits and never will be….it’s only downhill from here.
Hello Larry says:
Actually only NCIS is valuable not the entire franchise itself, NCIS: LA and NCIS: NO never quite hit the same kind of success internationally or syndication that NCIS has hit but NCIS: NO hasn’t been in the syndication market yet but LA has not been that successful.
Really Joe? Really? You’re going to go there? You already know you’re wrong on Chicago so don’t try to fool me there. Chicago has pretty much saved NBC over the past 4 years and it’s the most successful franchise of the decade so far outside on broadcast television. Syndication will be huge for the show, don’t believe read any articles on the net about how much money NBC and Dick Wolf is set to make off the show. It’s going to be the most successful NBC enterprise since Law & Order back in the 90s and 2000s. Just to trump any notion that the Chicago shows aren’t hits, then why would NBC make 3 spin-offs of them? NBC is not spinning off three different shows that aren’t doing well for them and it’s been the only series consistently to rate well out of The Voice.
Joe says:
Really Larry?? Saved NBC (HAHAHA) So the Voice didn’t? The Chicago franchise struggles against NCIS/Minds and it “saved NBC?”. I’m not trying to “fool you” its obvious the shows are average and syndication will probably be as great as modern family (pun intended). I have nothing against the show other than people who love them so much exaggerating the truth b/c it makes them feel better.
Dick Wolf and NBC will make money and a lot of it no doubt, but the bar is very low on ratings nowadays and a mere 1.5 demo many call a “hit” or in this case “saving a net” is in fact below mediocrity
renamoretti1 says:
Again with apologies to Hello Larry whose opinion I enjoy reading, but the idea that the Chicagos “saved NBC” with ratings lower than 10 million viewers overnight is pushing it quite a bit and saying that they’re more valuable that NCIS and its clones is just false.
The NCIS clones are about at the level of the Chicagos (ie. unimpressive) and I’m not sure what would give anyone the idea that they’ll rake in big ratings (thus big money) in syndication (I mean beyond NBC’s syndication arm claiming they’re getting huge amounts).
Joe: Love that you recall how poorly Modern Family has down in syndication. 🙂
renamoretti1 says:
I don’t know about “downhill”, but it’s obvious (unless you’re a super-fan of the Chicagos – Sorry Hello Larry 🙂 ) that the NCIS shows are a LOT more valuable.
They have better ratings, which will translate into better ratings in syndication and ratings = money.
Joe says:
I thought Containment was pretty good and to be honest its plot is a politically risky one. Syrian refugees, potential virus used as a weapon….I like that as its kind of possible if the refugees come here. On the downside the CW has no idea how to write about relationships. No way a guys best friend calls up his girlfriend to tell her to move in with him because he hurt she hurt his buddy….and he dated her b4???? Oh ya that isn’t a big thing (whatever). Also, young 20 something year olds aren’t looking for 30 plus with a kid to get with….sorry but the vast majority want someone either younger or just as free as them to mess with. Lastly, that cop is WAY to thin, cops need bulk and the white/latin dude looks anemic.
I don’t know who the writers are, whether they are are influenced by feminists or gay viewpoints or they are activists wanting to dictate how things “should be” these writers are just plain AWFUL…..guys compartmentalize their emotions and we don’t give everything emotionally to our girls….girls do give everything (yes I’m stereotyping a bit here) but its just the things are….what is wrong with putting it like it is? I guy being iffy with his pregnant girl is kind of normal…..a guy is also the one who is more resistant to moving in, heck even in the gay community its the lesbians who are always moving in with each other (time and time again no less). And its the guy in his 20’s who may be nice to an older woman but in reality he wants someone like him (young) the only way he gets with an older woman (I’m talking 10-15 years older) is if its just a booty call and that’s it, other than that he wants younger.
While I spent much of my time on the personal relationships of the show I did like everything else about the show and I will be back…but I hope it does not go the way of the 100, I gave up on that show 2 months ago and haven’t missed it due to their unrealistic writing of how the sexes act with each other….ridiculous
renamoretti1 says:
CW shows have been universally awful. That’s why they can’t get people to watch.
renamoretti1 says:
Once again, I have to laugh at New Girl’s puny ratings and wonder why FOX demands more…
Same with the disastrous Agent of SHIELD.
Amazing how the flops keep getting produced at great cost.
